Students first began their assignment by discussing the purpose of a sketchbook. They learned that professional artists use them to generate ideas, experiment with materials and reflect on complete projects. For art class, the students would be using their sketchbooks to generate ideas, experiment with materials, take notes, create preliminary sketches and keep their worksheets organized by gluing in their handouts.
To begin the process, the students went through a quick Prezi to introduce the project and process. The students were given very few guidelines. The first was that the students needed to:
Incorporate their name in a stacked formation
Add a base or horizon line.
Choose and depict a theme that represented their personality
Add color using colored pencil
Use a reference while drawing their images
Preliminary Sketches
Before the students could begin working on their final copy of their cover, the students were required to sketch out 4 DIFFERENT preliminary ideas of their cover. The students chose their favorite design and added color using colored pencils to the selected thumbnail.
