Color SystemsNext, the class learned about the different types of color systems and how we see color. The students learned that there are two different types of color systems, RGB and CMYK.
RGB is a color system that involves light and uses red, green and blue light to create different colors. This color system is used mainly for cell phones, tablets and television screens. CMYK is a color system that involves ink like materials such as computer ink, paint and markers. These are created by layering each color on one layer at a time to create the specified color. |

After the students learned how we see color, the students began their journey on how to create different colors. The students learned the difference between tints, tones and shades. The students used this knowledge as well as their prior knowledge of primary, secondary and tertiary colors to create their color wheels using acrylic paint.

Mini Apple PaintingNow that the students had a full understanding of how to correctly create different colors in a variety of tints and shades, we took it one step further for the students to understand how to paint in layers. The students had the option of choosing between five different images of apples. The students choose an option that appealed to them and then began to sketch out the outline on their illustration board. From there, the students began with an under-painting and built their colors up from there. If the students forgot the next step, they could reference the step by step poster hanging in the classroom or also on their iPad in the Google Classroom app.

Swatch Painting Practice The students had to find a colorful ad from a magazine and practice their color mixing techniques by recreating 12 different colors and paint the swatches in their sketchbooks.
The students learned that in order to tone down some of the colors, they needed to add the complimentary color. |
Project IntroductionOnce the students had a solid understanding of how to use and manipulate acrylic paint, the students were introduced to their project. In this project the students were required to choose a song that represented themselves or was meaningful to them personally.
Once the song was selected, the students needed to analyze the song lyrics. The students needed to pull imagery from the lyrics. The students were then required to search and save at least 4 images and upload them to Google Classroom. These images would be used as both a drawing and painting reference. Before the students could start on their final, they needed to create 4 thumbnail sketches showing different compositions. Out of these 4 thumbnails, the students chose their strongest and added color using colored pencil. Once the blueprints were created, the students began to sketch out their final composition on their illustration board. |
