Spirit Animal Project |
The students first began the unit by looking at composition. The students learned about the meaning of a spirit animal, this is an animal that shares similar attributes or personality traits of a person. The students were asked to develop a list of personality traits and their interests. From the list, the students needed to think of an animal that could represent themselves. The students then needed to find a photo reference of an the chosen animal.
Step 1: BrainstormingThe students needed to create four different thumbnail sketches of their design. On one half of the animal, the students needed to create a realistic rendering of the animal. On the other side, the students needed to create a abstract and simplified version of the animals using geometric shapes.
Step 2: Sketching the FinalStudents cut and pasted the photo of their animal on their final paper. Students used the left over pieces to help create their realistic side of the image as well as their abstract geometric side.
Step 3: Adding ColorStudents were require to add color to the image using colored pencil. To make the abstract geometric side feel more flat, the students were required to outline the shapes using Sharpie. Students were required to color mix and match values to replicate the animals realistic colors. The students were allowed to use bright colors on the geometric side of the animal.
