Day 1: Introduction to ValueWhen the Studio Art students walked into class they were given one simple directive as a warm up, "Draw These" as a pre-assessment to gage the students prior knowledge. The students then began to recrerate these projected forms as accurately as possible. Most of the students drew these images giving the illusion of form. Some students went beyond the contour outline and began to use their prior knowledge of shading and began to add value to drawings to give the viewer even more information about the objects' form.
The students spent the rest of the day being introduced to value, the value scale and the impact of light source. The students were asked to show their understanding of this concept through a self guided worksheet. |
Day 2: Value ScaleThe next day the studio art class was introduced to a mini-project. The students needed to show their knowledge of the prior day's lesson and create a value scale in and interesting way. The only requirement was the the value scale and image must take up the entire page within their sketchbook, but also include a wide range of values with the whitest white and dark black as well as all the shades in between.
Day 3: Drawing tips |
In the third day of the unit, the class went over different tips to keep in mind in order to make the students drawings as successful as possible. The tips ranged from using a wide of values throughout your drawings, make the highlights and shadows pop, don't muddy your drawings by shading everything, etc. Afterwards, the studets were asked to grab a box of "stuff" and arrange the still life objects in an interesting way for each table to draw.
