Students began their project by being introduced to Wayne Thiebaud, a popular painter that became famous of his pop culture paintings often depicting sweets such as cakes, sodas and candies.
The students also learned about the Rule of Thirds. The Rule of Thirds is a guideline that applies to the designing, films, paintings, and photographs. The guideline proposes that important parts of the image should line up or touch these grid lines to make the composition stronger. |
The students were given a wide variety of candies to choose from for their painting project. The students were required to create three different compositions and photograph each. Once photographed, Ms. S uploaded the images for the students to sketch out each of their images on their thumbnail worksheet.

The students had to choose which image they wanted to work on. Ms. S printed out the images. In the past the students hot glued down the candy. However, in the past, the candy would often mysteriously go missing as time progressed and we no longer able to paint those missing pieces. This is why I chose to have the students work from printed images instead. Once the students had their images printed. The students began to sketch out their candy images on their illustration board. The students were required to sketch out not only the shapes and designs on the candy, but they were also asked to pay attention to the highlights and shadows as well.
