Understanding ColorWe began our unit by discussing the power of color and how it can effect the way we think and the way we feel. The students learned how different colors group together can have an affect our emotions and how we feel about the scene. The best example of this is in Disney Pixar's animated film Up, the artists use vibrant and bright colors to give the feeling of happiness and joy. But when tragedy strikes, the artists use darker and muted colors to create the feeling of pain and disappointment. Color Systems
The students began their project learning how to recreate colors on the color wheel only using CMYK paint. This would help prepare the students for their upcoming project so that they could accurately replicate the colors within their photographed food reference. Setting up the Grid
Once the grid was created, the students used their photo reference to begin sketching out their painting. Student Work

Students began their project by being introduced to Wayne Thiebaud, a popular painter that became famous of his pop culture paintings often depicting sweets such as cakes, sodas and candies. The students also learned about the Rule of Thirds. The Rule of Thirds is a guideline that applies to the designing, films, paintings, and photographs. The guideline proposes that important parts of the image should line up or touch these grid lines to make the composition stronger. The students first learned about the grid technique and how to recreate and enlarge an image. The students practiced this skill through an interactive worksheet. The students began their project learning how to recreate colors on the color wheel only using primary colors paint. This would help prepare the students for their upcoming project so that they could accurately replicate the colors of each of the different labels. The students had to choose which image they wanted to work on. In the past the students hot glued down the candy. However, in the past, the candy would often mysteriously go missing as time progressed and we no longer able to paint those missing pieces. This is why I chose to have the students work from digital images instead. Once the students had their images, the students began to sketch out their candy images on their illustration board using the grid technique and the Rule of Thirds. The students were required to sketch out not only the shapes and designs on the candy, but they were also asked to pay attention to the highlights and shadows as well.
Once the students had their contour line drawings, the students began to add color using their background knowledge of color mixing to create accurate color matching to create a more realistic rendering. |
