The students first began this project by bring introduced to Jim Dine and Pop art. The students learned about how his artwork has transformed throughout the years from images with lots of color to images with very little color. Drawing Paint Brushes with ObservationThe students first task was to take different paint brushes and arrange them any way they wanted. The students could have them in a row or piled up and scattered about the table. The students were instructed that they were not allowed to trace the brushes and they had to draw from life. The students had to pay careful attention to specific details in the brush such as highlights and reflections as well as any creases and dips in the metal. Some students went as far as drawing the chipped paint on the handles of the brushes. Outlining with SharpieAdding Dimension with ValueAdding Color with WatercolorStudent Artwork

Adding Color with Oil PastelAdding Shadow with Chalk PastelStudents began their project by being introduced to Wayne Thiebaud, a popular painter that became famous of his pop culture paintings often depicting sweets such as cakes, sodas and candies. The students also learned about the Rule of Thirds. The Rule of Thirds is a guideline that applies to the designing, films, paintings, and photographs. The guideline proposes that important parts of the image should line up or touch these grid lines to make the composition stronger. The students first learned about the grid technique and how to recreate and enlarge an image. The students practiced this skill through an interactive worksheet. The students began their project learning how to recreate colors on the color wheel only using primary colors paint. This would help prepare the students for their upcoming project so that they could accurately replicate the colors of each of the different labels. The students had to choose which image they wanted to work on. In the past the students hot glued down the candy. However, in the past, the candy would often mysteriously go missing as time progressed and we no longer able to paint those missing pieces. This is why I chose to have the students work from digital images instead. Once the students had their images, the students began to sketch out their candy images on their illustration board using the grid technique and the Rule of Thirds. The students were required to sketch out not only the shapes and designs on the candy, but they were also asked to pay attention to the highlights and shadows as well.
Once the students had their contour line drawings, the students began to add color using their background knowledge of color mixing to create accurate color matching to create a more realistic rendering. |
